Taking Stock

Dear Editor,

Taking stock of Congressman Good’s performance, as the first six months of Congressman Bob Good’s first term in office ends, it’s worth taking stock of what he’s accomplished so far in Washington. The Congressman has certainly made headlines, but not always for good reasons.

He called the COVID-19 pandemic “phony” and then refused to support the American Rescue Plan Act that sped up vaccinations, delivered direct checks to Virginians, and provided funding to keep small businesses open and state employees like teachers and police officers employed. While Good ran on a promise to support law enforcement, his vote against the ARP – which helped Virginia raise police salaries – is a broken promise.

Good notably has spent more time pushing election conspiracy theories than supporting any bill that will benefit all Virginians and those of the 5th Congressional District. He asserted false claims of election fraud, voted against certifying election results after the January 6th riot, and most recently voted against awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to police officers who protected him and his colleagues when the Capitol was under attack.

When it comes to education, Good has spent his time pushing conspiracy theories to insert politics into our classrooms rather than prioritize issues like rural broadband expansion and school construction. Instead of standing up for equality, justice, and equal treatment of all his constituents, Good continues to align himself with far-right figures who shamelessly stoke controversy to divide Virginians.

With little to show for his first six months in office, it’s time for Congressman Good to start listening to his constituents. Call his office at 202-225-4711 and let him know your expectation is for him to address the issues for all residents of the 5th Congressional District. If we can’t change Good’s mind, we’ll change his seat next November.

SINCERELY,

PATRICIA HARPER-TUNLEY

LUNENBURG COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE
