SVCC Men’s Basketball Team Earns VCCS Three-Peat

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team earned its third straight Virginia Community College System basketball title after topping Thomas Nelson CC 86-68 last Sunday afternoon in the title game at Brunswick High School.

The win improved SVCC to 16-7 for the season.

It was the fifth VCCS title for SVCC in the past six years.

SVCC will open play on Thursday in the USA National Prep Championships in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

“Our guys really got after it on the defensive end of the court on Sunday,” said SVCC coach Dennis Smith. “We are playing some of our best basketball of the season at the right time and we are hoping to keep the momentum going into the national tournament.”

SVCC jumped out to a 6-2 lead on a dunk by Khari Jenkins at the 17:20 mark of the first half.

Thomas Nelson rebounded to take a seven-point lead at 22-15 but SVCC got buckets from Tevin Holloway, Ed Maxwell and Marcus Hoosier to take a 25-24 lead at the 5:40 mark.

Jenkins scored two straight buckets late in the half to give SVCC a 38-32 halftime lead.

SVCC opened up a 42-35 lead on Hoosier’s dunk at the 17:07 mark of the second half and extended that lead to double digits on a 3-point play by Maxwell at the 16:47 mark.

A trey by Maxwell at the 12:23 mark gave SVCC a 56-42 lead.

A trey by Hoosier and two free-throws by Rashaun Alexander gave SVCC a 65-53 lead with 6:79 left to play.

A trey by Devone Dugger and a bucket by Terrance Price gave SVCC a 72-56 lead on the way to the victory.

Hoosier led SVCC with 24 points and six rebounds while Ed Maxwell added 18 points and 13 assists.

Khari Jenkins finished with 14 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks for SVCC.

Brandan Joyner led Thomas Nelson with 24 points while Marquise Adams added 13.

Hoosier, Maxwell, Jenkins, Joyner and Adams were all named to the VCCS first team.
