Subscription for Freshness: CSA Programs Deliver Local Produce to Your Door

Flowers are blooming, birds are singing and the days are getting longer! Spring is upon us and the beauty of nature is even more evident this time of year. For those who desire a clean, organic way of living, there’s no better time to start shopping around for fresh produce from local growers and produce stands.

For farmers in Virginia, the early months of spring are typically the season for greens such as kale, napa cabbage, Swiss chard, bok choy and varieties of lettuce to name a few.  Additionally, around this time of year, participating local growers are beginning to have sign-ups for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription shares.

According to the USDA National Agriculture Library, “Community Supported Agriculture consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community’s farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production.”  The CSA subscription share program works just like any other subscription service. For a monthly fee, the subscriber receives an allotted amount of fresh produce throughout the growing season.  Localharvest.org explained, “a farmer offers a certain number of ‘shares’ to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a ‘membership’ or a ‘subscription’) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.”  By purchasing a CSA subscription share to a local farm, consumers have the benefit of receiving fresh fruit at a fair cost.  Interested in trying out a CSA subscription share for yourself?  Check out a list of local farms who offer the service to get you started.
