plane flowSevere storms rolled across the Farmville Regional Airport last Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2015. Unfortunately, an airplane reportedly owned by Ernest Palmer was for the second time in the path of the storm. According to Bill Sammler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Wakefield office, what occurred at Newman Field on Saturday afternoon was a “microburst event, with strong straight line winds.” According to other reports, it appears that the strong winds broke the tie down ropes designed to secure the plane on the field. The storm winds then blew the plane across the field and impacting a carport next to the terminal. The plane had only recently been damaged in a similar storm. Strong winds also ripped the roofs from several of the privately owned hangers at the airport and brought down trees in the neighboring Farmville Municipal Golf Course. Town employees were on scene Saturday afternoon clearing trees from the course. By Noel Oliver
