Songs Of Broadway

Last Saturday night, August 10th, this reporter and friends headed out for Broadway.  Instead of boarding Amtrak, we ventured out in my van to the town of Clarksville, Virginia.

community-newsThere, at 7:30 p.m., The Clarksville Community Players’ Youth Theatre Workshop presented Songs of Broadway to a full house.  A matinee at 3 p.m. was scheduled for Sunday, August 11th.

I wish everyone I know could have experienced these young and very talented performers.  Such beautiful voices coming from the stage made one wonder, “Where do they find this young talent?”  I was informed that Clarksville, Chase City, South Hill, South Boston and surrounding areas were represented by these twenty-five young people for this production.

This reporter was sincerely impressed by their voices, their confidence and their stage presence.  These kids should be on Broadway.  I do hope that they all get to visit New York City and attend a Broadway musical.

Who knows?  Someone from this cast just might end up on Broadway if it’s in the stars for them and they really want to pursue this for a career.

Director Georgene Glasscock was the significant force behind this production along with her multi-talented music director son, Joshua Glasscock.

This production also included the other two sons, Zachary and Lucas.  Clarksville should give another standing ovation for the “behind the scenes” and “on stage” work of this Glasscock family.

The best husband and father in the world, Curtis Glasscock, was acknowledged in the program for his constant support of his family in the theater.  I am proud to personally know this Christian family.

These talented youngsters performed Broadway show songs from Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, South Pacific, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and many more.  Georgene told me that she was astounded that these performers knew the words to all of the songs by the second Tuesday of rehearsals.

I have attended many performances of the Clarksville Community Players but this was my first Youth Theatre Workshop production.  More advertising for all of these plays should come our way in Charlotte County.

The CCP Officers and Board members, President Barry Roberts, VP Joshua Glasscock, Secretary Melody Green, Treasurer Georgene Glasscock, and Directors Jim Bellissimo, Kim Demetriades, Hugh Elliott, and Susan McKee should be recognized for their leadership of this wonderful community project.

None of the production would have been possible without the tireless work of a fabulous production crew.  The costumes, sound, lights, set construction and set design were outstanding.  Never was a sound heard as each scene changed for the next song.  Amazing!  Kudos to the Stage Manager for his work.

I really don’t know how the choreographers do their job but every scene was done well.  It was quite evident that each young person on stage was enjoying the moment.

Georgene, quite a talent herself, surprised her out-of-town family by performing in “Master of the House” from Les Miserables.

I’m still smiling from this very entertaining night and send my congratulations to The CCP Youth Theatre Workshop for a job well done.  Keep up the good work!
