Small town Christmas 082

The small town of Victoria celebrated Christmas in a big way this past Saturday as they hosted their third Annual Small Town Christmas Celebration. The day started early at Uptown Coffee Café where kids and their parents could have breakfast with Santa. While the folks at the café were busy serving up breakfast, the rest of the town was preparing for a busy fun-filled day.  Free wagon rides were offered at Railroad Park by Brenda Ramsey of Clarksville and her team of Belgian horses. There may not have been snow on this beautiful sunny day, but there were certainly sleigh bells to be heard.  Children also had the opportunity to ride in the barrel train provided by Southside Virginia Community College, jump in the bouncy house, or just enjoy a day in the park as their parents visited with friends and neighbors.

Arts and crafts were on sale in the Victoria Community Center with a full assortment of last-minute gifts available.  From Tastefully Simple to simply tasteful, there was truly something for everyone to be found in Victoria. Special appearances from Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch and even Cindy Lou Who were made along the street with ample opportunities for photos.

Musical talent was showcased with two Main Street performances. Lunenburg’s own Soggy Bread Boys shared their homespun music on a wash bucket of everyone’s Christmas favorite carols—which offered good clean fun. Later in the day Central High School’s Jazz Band shared their version of Christmas which would have made ole Bing Crosby smile.

But in the midst of all the fun and games, the Victoria Church of the Nazarene helped bring everything into focus as they reminded everyone the reason for the season. Their live nativity was quietly on display and the simple, rustic manger scene spoke peace in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the day.

The commercialism of Christmas may make us want more, but deep down all that is important can really be found at home.
