LUNENBURG – Following a reported incident on Monday morning when a male in a white van allegedly pulled up to a bus stop area where a child was waiting to be picked up, Lunenburg County Public Schools issued a letter to parents from Superintendant Charles Berkley explaining details that could be offered about the situation as well as reminding people of safety and outlining schools safety.

This comes just a week after a Kenbridge child was allegedly abducted by a man before jumping from a vehicle and escaping. Law enforcement quickly found and arrested the culprit in that incident.

The letter from LCPS said that the child had gone back to their home from the bus stop location and reported the incident to their mother. The mother then contacted the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office and the school division to make everyone aware.

The release stated, “Currently this incident is under investigation by the Virginia State Police and the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Department. Should you know of any information or details related to the above incident please contact the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Department.”

The letter continued, “As always the intent of this communication is to raise awareness of this specific situation, but also to remind all parents and guardians to talk with their children about strangers and the importance of being aware of their surroundings.”

“Lunenburg County Public Schools is dedicated to the student’s safety and well being at all times. Your child’s safety is our number one priority while being transported to and from school and during the school day.”

Lunenburg has taken numerous precautions in recent years to ensure safety at school including keeping doors locked during the day and having surveillance equipment that covers the grounds. Statistics show that schools are one of the safest locations for a child, but precautions still continue to ensure that this remains the case.
