Charlotte County Youth Soccer plays big part in preparing athletes
By April Hall, Staff Writer
Soccer has become an increasingly popular sport in recent years in Charlotte County. The sport was first introduced to the county with the formation of Charlotte County Youth Soccer (CCYS) in 2003 with U12 and under playing at Eureka Elementary School and U15 and U18 playing at the former Early Learning Center in Charlotte Court House. Since its inception, the sport has become loved and adored by not only the players, but their leagues of fans through the years.
With its introduction, Charlotte County Youth Soccer has afforded many players the opportunity to begin play at a young age and learn the key skills needed to move to the next level. This has become even more evident as Randolph-Henry High School has reached new heights, moving from a co-ed team which first began play in 2004, to implementing individual boys and girls teams for the 2015-2016 school year.
The boys and girls played their first games as individual teams last week, with the boys traveling to Central of Lunenburg on Monday and both boys and girls playing at home on Wednesday against Bluestone High School.
The boys were led by Captains John Walker, and Noah and Christian Pinchefsky, all of which were early alumni of Charlotte County Youth Soccer and Coach Patrick Shay.
The girls were led by Captains Lindy Newcomb and Abby Michaelson both of which are alumna of CCYS, and Coach Penny Miles.
The boys had a big win against Central of Lunenburg with an 8-0 win on Monday. On Wednesday the boys played a nail-bitter against Bluestone with the game ending in a 2-2 tie with R-H’s final goal coming within seconds of the buzzer! The young girls team took a hard loss to Bluestone with a 10-0 finish, but played hard and demonstrated strong team work.
This year’s boys team consists of Shane Maloney, Chris Nichols, Jason Moorehead, Josh Brown, Noah Pinchefsky, Michael Nichols, Franklin Morton Jr., Matthew Polling, Brycen Parnell, Christian Pinchefsky, Jonathon Boettcher, Caleb Chadwick, Bailey Miller, Ja’Rell Brooks and John Walker.
The girls team consists of Lindy Newcomb, Najiyah Westry, Ashlye Lara, Rugayya Westry, Alexi Dickerson, Ashley Jones, Araina Errickson, Brooke Stoots, Abby Michaelson, Kendal Tharpe, Sarah Grissom, Caitlin Lloyd, Krista Dotten, Kallie Traylor, Hailey Jonhson and Adrianne Nelson.
As the sport of soccer continues to gain popularity in Charlotte County, the Charlotte County Youth Soccer league continues its quest to prepare our youth for middle school and high school level play and is always looking for volunteers and donors to help in its efforts. The league is currently in a much-needed field location(s) situation and would appreciate any and all efforts in helping to make this a reality. To donate or sign up to volunteer with CCYS contact Donna Whitlow at 434-660-6578.
