R-H Varsity Tennis Team Ends Their Season at the 2A State Tournament

r-h girls tennisCHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE – The 2019 girls varsity tennis team had an exciting and emotional year.  After losing last season in the regional semifinals, they had a common goal – to advance to the state tournament.  The season started strong for the Lady Statesmen winning the first ten matches without any losses.  In the middle of the season, the girls suffered the loss of one of their mentors and supporters, Gretchen Bates, whom had lost her battle with cancer.  The team pulled together and through an emotional concerted effort they managed to finish the regular season 14-0.  The Lady Statesmen advanced to the regional tournament and placed as Regional 2A runner-up.  The Lady Statesmen netters traveled to Woodstock and faced Central (Woodstock) High School on May 31, 2019.  They lost 5-0.  This was the first time in school history the girls tennis team advanced to the state tournament in 2A.  Of note, Central Woodstock, Goochland and Maggie Walker will move out of this division next year into 3A.

At the tennis banquet, players were recognized for their achievements with a special award.  The  following received  recognition:  Grace Algeier was awarded Best All Around, record 14-0 in singles for the regular season , 13-1 in doubles regular season and finished Region 2A runner up in singles play.  Kiersten Dotten received Most Improved.  This was Kiersten’s first year as a seeded player and she finished the regular season 13-1 in singles and 13-1 in doubles.    Eliza Walker and McKenzie Sharpe received Most Wins in Doubles, 14-0 for the regular season.  McKenzie Sharpe received Coach’s Award.  Kaylee Moon, McKenzie Sharpe, and Pearl Sandridge also completed the regular season undefeated in singles, 14-0.
