LUNENBURG – The Central Chargers and Randolph-Henry Statesmen JV basketball teams faced off in Lunenburg on Monday night in the final James River District game for each team.
The game would be close throughout with R-H pulling ahead late and holding on for a 37-32 win.
The first half saw both teams play good defense. Central was led inside by Khalil Moore and Jackson Dalton, while R-H used strong play by their backcourt of Tyrik Beattie and Jashon Puryear. The teams would go to halftime with Central holding a 16-15 lead.
The second half saw Central jump ahead 27-21 behind strong play from T’zion Wilkerson, Darien Jones and Davion Taylor, but the Statesmen battled back and took a 35-32 lead on the strength of several three pointers by Puryear.
With just over a minute remaining, Matthew Harding hit a pair of free throws that sealed the deal for R-H and gave them a 37-32 victory.
R-H was led in scoring by Puryear with 15 points and Beattie with 11. Central was led by Moore with 12, Dalton with 9 and Wilkerson with 5.
