CHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE – The Randolph-Henry varsity volleyball team squared off against Prince Edward last Thursday in a re-match of their epic five-game James River District battle from three weeks ago. This time, the Lady Statesmen took the suspense out of things early, though, as they won the first two games and went on to take the 3-0 victory.

Paced by three kills from Jakya Pettus, the Lady Statesmen took an early lead in the first game and held off a Prince Edward rally for the 25-19 win.  In the second game, Cymirra Shuford picked up six of her game-high 12 kills to go with three from Elizabeth Devin, and Lindsey Kunath chipped-in four aces as Randolph-Henry gave themselves some breathing room with a 25-15 win.

Prince Edward was not done, though. The Lady Eagles rallied in the third game and led 23-20 before the Lady Statesmen closed the match with a 5-0 rally. Annie Sandridge served the game’s final five points, including two aces, and Randolph-Henry got two Shuford kills to close out the game 25-23.

Kimmi Horsfall led the defensive effort with 10 digs while Sandridge and Shuford had nine and eight digs, respectively. Dominique Dews added four digs with no errors, as well.

“This was a good team effort,” said head coach Shep Critzer. “The ladies worked hard in practice this week to refocus some things, and it showed. Defensively, we moved and communicated well. Kimmi (Horsfall), Kailyn (Wray), and Dominque (Dews) combined for 15 digs and only two errors, so that is a good night. Offensively, we served very aggressively.”

Randolph-Henry will close out the regular season at home on Thursday with a Senior Night showdown against Nottoway.
