CHARLOTTE C.H. – The Randolph-Henry Statesmen Boys Basketball team continued their strong early season play with a big win over Lunenburg last week. The Statesmen beat Central by a 64-21 score, which puts them in a tie with Goochland for 1st place in the James River District.  After that win, the Statesmen are 4-0, 5-3 as they enter the winter break.

The team started the season with a loss at 4A Amherst 72-55 though the Statesmen led the whole 1st half and by as much as 9 points in the 2nd Quarter.  Tremaine Pugh led the team in scoring with 21 points and Nasheim Pettus had 15 on the night. The Statesmen won the next game at home against Gretna 70-44. Pugh and Pettus again led the scoring with 15 each, while Jordan Jones added 10.

The first James River District game was against the Bluestone Barons.  This was a back and forth game but R-H prevailed 59-50. Pettus had 16, Pugh had 11 and Veiw Moore scored a big 10 points off the bench.

The next game for R-H was at Prince Edward and they came away with the 1st district road win in a 50-34 victory.  Pugh had 18 points and Jones had 14 to pace the team in this win.

R-H suffered a loss in the next game at Dan River 67-48,who is ranked 5th in the state by Virginia Preps in 2A.  Coach Graves stated, “We came out cold to begin the game and never could overcome it.  We went 8 minutes without scoring between the 1st and 2nd Quarter with 20 straight possessions without scoring.”  R-H was still only down by 8 points in the game, but could not close the gap. Jones led the team in scoring with 15, while Pugh was held to 7.

R-H then picked up a big JRD win when they defeated Amelia with a big 2nd half.  Leading by only 5 at the half, R-H came out and put the game away in the 3rd.  The final score was 70-39.  Jones scored 20 and Pugh 18.

R-H played Dan River again and came away with a 67-55 loss.  The game was close most the way, with R-H narrowing the lead to 1 point midway through the 4th quarter. Jones led the team in scoring with 21 and Pugh had 15.

The Lunenburg game was not close as the Chargers were without three of their five starters and R-H took advantage of that. The Statesmen jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back.  The halftime score was 42-11 and all members of the Statesmen scored in the game.  Pugh had 16 points and Pettus had 9 in limited action to pace the team.
