VICTORIA – Victoria officials recently held a pair of public hearings for the budget and proposed utility and meals tax increases this month as they look at ways to offset increasing costs to operate and run the town.

The Town of Victoria is proposing an increase to water, sewer and refuse fees to town residents. The Town Council of Victoria met on May 10, 2016 as Mayor Carol Watson explained the purpose of the Public Hearing was to take comments on the proposed increase of $5 to the utility bill, the proposed increase of 1% to the meals tax, and the FY17 Budget.

There were no public comments about the budget or proposed increases to the utility and refuse fees. Hearing no comments, a motion was made by Councilmember Mattox and seconded by Councilmember Brame to leave Public Hearing.  The group will likely pass the budget and increases at the June meeting.

The water fees would be $28.50 each billing cycle for the use of 3,000 gallons. Anyone using water over that quantity the rate would be $5.17 per 1,000 gallons. This is a $2.00 increase for the water fees.

Sewer rates for anyone using town sewer services will be $15.50 (Up $2.00) for each family or business establishment and entitles them to the use of 3,000 gallons. For sewer used in excess of the 3,000 gallons, there will be a charge of $5.54 per 1,000 gallons. There is a proposed sewer charge of $25.50 (Up $2.00) for each billing cycle for those users with sewer only.

Refuse will see a $1 increase as each residential householder would have a charge in the amount of $11.00 per month ($1.00 increase) for in town collection and $14.00 per month ($1.00 increase) for out of town collection.

There is also a proposed rate increase to the meals tax rate in Victoria as a rate of 5% (1% increase) on the amount paid for meals purchased from any food establishment. The Town Council will use 1% of the above rate to help with the Park and Recreation Fund.
