LUNENBURG – The CHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation held their 4th Annual CHS 5K this past Saturday with many local runners and supporters participating in the event. The yearly event which goes toward raising money for a scholarship presented to a graduating Central High School senior had participants ranging from under 8 years old, to the “66 to 125” age category as organizer Al Vaughan jokingly said.
Winning the race this year was CHS student Ben Atkins who ran the 5K in 19:14 and kept the Atkins family win streak alive as brothers Taylor and Clint have both previously won the event.
The best times of the day included Richard Ferguson (20:05), Billy Coleburn (20:42), Patrick Powers (20:27), Taylor Atkins (21:48) and Ben Spencer (22:20).
For the women’s category, Patricia Mahaney won with a time of 30:37, while Nancy Vogt finished second in 36:27 and Susan Parrish, who was part of a large Benchmark Bank contingent of supporters was third with a time of 38:16.
Jarod Aubel ran an impressive time of 23:14 to claim the top spot in the 9-12 age group with Sterling Currin also running strong with a 25:15 time.
The race started at the front of Central High School, crossed over Main St/K-V Road near the Dollar General Store to the Heritage Trail along the historic Virginian Railway tracks. It then came back to finish up in Central’s football stadium where music and support helped bring the runners in to the finish line where former Central High School State Champion runner and current teacher/coach Mike Atkins gave the officials time.
