Pamplin Beauty Crowned Miss Va.

Courtney Paige Garrett of Pamplin was crowned “Miss Virginia 2014” on Saturday, June 28 at the Miss Virginia Pageant at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Garrett is a 21-year-old Liberty University graduate who competed in the Miss Virginia 2014 pageant under the local title of “Miss State Fair of Virginia.”  Garrett represented her community service platform, “defying disabilities,” as she wowed the judges from start to finish.  In addition to being crowned “Miss Virginia 2014,” Garrett also took home the Miss Virginia Quality of Life Award.

According to the Miss Virginia Website, “The Miss Virginia Pageant is a scholarship pageant, and each year scholarship dollars are given to deserving young women from all over the state who participate in local pageants and the state pageant.”  The Miss Virginia pageant was held in Roanoke for the first time in 1953 and has been there ever since.

The mission of the Miss Virginia Pageant is, “through the state and local organizations, to support education, advocate community service, and provide young women with a forum in which to express their talents, intelligence and opinions in culture, politics, platforms, and the community.”

Former Miss Virginia Desiree Williams crowned Garrett Saturday night and for her achievement she received a $17,500 pageant scholarship.  Garrett is a 2014 graduate of Liberty University where she double-majored in Vocal Performance and Communication Studies (PR).  Past accomplishments of Garrett’s include: placing top 5 in PR Week Student of the Year Competition, performing in Carnegie Hall for National Sacred Honor Choir and being pictured with her brother on a “Wheaties” cereal box representing the Special Olympics.

Currently, Garrett is attending graduate school at Liberty and working on her master’s in Business Administration.  She will be traveling to Atlantic City, New Jersey, on September 14 to represent the state of Virginia in the Miss America Pageant.
