P.E. Supervisors Vote to Help Jail

The Prince Edward county Board of Supervisors met for the month of April and approved a resolution that will set in motion a feasibility/planning study that will consider the possible expansion of the intake area of the county jail. The proposed new intake area will have 12 additional intake cells which could be pressed into service as overflow or as suicide watch cells should the need arise. The resolution included the purchase of 33 acres of land situated adjacent to the jail property. This is important in that there is no other land available to use for future expansion. Funds to make the purchase are to come from the Juvenile Detention Reserve fund.

In other business, Dr. Wilkie Chaffin spoke during the public participation portion of the meeting. He asked the Board to clarify the need to enter into closed session to discuss business surrounding “sewer lines.” He pointed out that according to codes, the Board could not enter into closed session to discuss business other than that which is currently being handled as open business of the Board. Chairman Simpson referred the matter to attorney for the Board, Commonwealth Attorney Ennis. Ennis explained the matter as the acknowledgement of a claim that had been submitted to the county for payment for sewer lines that had been constructed at the Manor, and the matter was taken into closed session.

In Highway Matters, it is pot hole season in Prince Edward county. Work is going on all over the county to fix up the mess that the winter weather made of the roads. Additionally, Twin Bridges road is closed, work is scheduled to be completed by June 30th 2015.  The Board  has once again authorized an advertisement for candidates for citizen appointments in Prince Edward County.
