ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Prince Edward-Farmville (PEFYA) Debs All Star team cruised through the Virginia State Tournament without a loss and headed to the World Series in Alexandria, Louisiana last week where they played well before falling to Florida in a one run game that eliminated them from tournament play.

One run loss 3 One run loss 2 One run lossPEFYA would open up the tournament by playing the host team from Alexandria. The host teams in these tournaments generally do well as they literally have home field advantage and get lots of participation in their leagues during years such as this.

Hannah-Gray Schmidt got the start on the mound for PEFYA, while Jaden Capati saw time in the circle as well for the Virginia squad.

PEFYA had gotten great pitching and hitting all post-season, but they would run into a strong opponent and fall by a 9-2 score in the opener.

This set up a game with Florida and Schmidt would start pitching again for PEFYA with Capati once again coming in for a relief appearance. Both pitchers did well and had four strikeouts together over the seven innings while helping slow down a potent Florida offense.

Florida would get on the scoreboard first with an early run. They added to their total in the third and fourth innings to gain a 4-0 advantage as the teams went to the fifth inning.

PEFYA had been silent at the plate, but got the bats rolling in the fifth as Abby Roach singled to start the inning and help her team get some momentum. Alexis Gayles, Maddie Moreland and Caroline Seal also scored during the outburst as Gracie Hodges tripled in three runners. During the big fifth inning, PEFYA would score five runs on nine hits and take a 5-4 lead in the contest.

Florida responded with two late runs to close out the game and claim the 6-5 win that would eliminate PEFYA from further play.

Congratulations to team members Gracie Hodges, Maddie Moreland, Alexa Marzloff, Jordyn Harris, Alexis Gayles, Hannah-Gray Schmidt, Abby Roach, Caroline Seal, Mary Grace Amos, Melissa Wright, Jaden Capati and Shaunice Beasley.
