Celebrating its Volunteers, the life blood of the organization, Meals on Wheels held its 13th Annual Volunteer Cookout on Sunday, September 22, 2012 from 4:00 til 6:00pm. Some 70 attendees enjoyed great food, lively fellowship and a glorious sunny fall afternoon at Wilck’s Lake Island.

2013 VolunteersMOW Board Chair Jeff Smith presented Rev. Dr. Tom Robinson, Pastor of Farmville Presbyterian Church, with the “Sponsor/Donor of the Year”. For the past two years, Farmville Presbyterian Church (FPC) has endorsed Meals on Wheels’ “Two Cents a Meal” grant applications (awarded by Presbytery of the Peaks), and they have directly donated to MOW…all total for two years $9500+. Last, but not least, 20% of MOW Volunteer drivers are members of Farmville Presbyterian Church.

In 2012, the Meals on Wheels Board of Directors created its version of a hall of fame, “Founders & Friends”, to recognize those who have made valuable contributions to Meals on Wheels over its 11-year existence. This year’s inductees are Bobbi Morgan and Tom Young, who have each served the organization as Volunteer Drivers for 10+ years. They join the 2012 inaugural class of Martha Cleveland, Nellie Coles, Hoke Currie, E.A. Mayo, Jim Ray, and Que Wilhelmi.

Rudy Hawkins, having driven 74 days, was recognized as this year’s “Super Driver”. Bob Webber was recognized as “Super Sub” since he drove 38 days in the last year.

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing and

delivering balanced, nutritional meals to elderly, disabled and home-bound adults of Prince Edward County. CENTRA Southside Community Hospital prepares the meals, and dedicated volunteers provide meal delivery service Monday through Friday. A 14-member Board of Directors serves as the governing body.
