On St. Patrick’s Day five years ago, the luck of the Irish was on one little boy’s side when an unexpected tragedy struck at his grandmother’s house in Lunenburg County.

According to Melissa Sherrill, her 5-year-old son Weylyn exited his grandmother’s house and climbed onto the side of an occupied truck parked in the yard. The driver did not see him and backed out. Weylyn fell off the side of the truck and the front wheel ran over his chest, dragging him. “He snuck out while she was talking to the oil man and when she got in the house he was not in here. Then she heard hollering and knew something bad had happened. I was at work at Kidz Korner. She called me and I was here in five minutes,” said Sherrill.

Sherrill explained that recovery was tough and Weylyn spent a week in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia Hospital suffering from injuries related to a lacerated liver, bruised lung, scars on the face and the removal of his belly button. Miraculously, Weylyn survived.

Now five years later, Weylyn has improved from what could have been a fatal day for the family. Although he is a survivor, Weylyn still suffers from problems with his stomach and has a learning disability.
