LUNENBURG – State officials have not reacted to the devastation that hit Southside Virginia this week, but Lunenburg officials declared a State of Emergency for their county.

County Board of Supervisors Chairman, C. Randy Slayton, declared a State of Local Emergency on behalf of the board for Lunenburg County. Calling the event Ice Storm 2021, this declaration activated the Local Emergency Operations Plan that included setting up warming shelters.

County officials stated, “We are working on setting up an Emergency Day Shelter at Lunenburg Middle School.” LMS is the only school in Lunenburg that has a generator for use in situations such as this. The shelter opened on Sunday as a place for “warming and charging” necessary electronics and medical devices.

While it is not possible to prepare food there, people could refill water containers with water. The shelters also require masks, hand sanitizer, necessary medications, and other items.
