dog walk winnerLongwood University held its annual 5K walk this past weekend to benefit the Southside SPCA.

Each year dog lovers gather on campus with their pets and take part in the 5K walk as a way to help raise funds for the no-kill shelter.

This year the event raised close to $2000.

Following the event, awards were given out to participants and their pets in categories such as smallest dog, largest dog, best dressed, etc.

Sarah Rakes of Keysville and her fur babies, Casey and Cooper, were winners in the smallest dog and cutest dressed categories.

“This makes the third year we’ve done this walk,” said Rakes. “It’s nice to join people with common interests to support such a good cause to save every animal possible. Every dog deserves to have a loving home. The people that help make saving lives possible with the SPCAs and humane societies hold a special place in my heart.”
