2016 Lunenburg DebsKENBRIDGE – The Lunenburg Girls Softball Debs All-Star team put together a great tournament run as the host team and made it all the way to day six of the event before finally bowing out in a close 9-6 ball game against Powhatan.

The game was set to start on Tuesday night, but another rain delay, as the weather did no favors for the tournament, caused the final innings to be played the following day.

Meri Agnes Dalton got the Lunenburg squad off to a fast start in the July 20th game as she blasted a solo home run early on to put Lunenburg up 1-0.

Powhatan would answer back with three runs and hold a 3-2 lead before Dalton stole home and tied the game up at 3-3.

The Lunenburg offense got another big blast by way of the home run as Nikera Lee hit another deep shot that pushed Lunenburg up 6-3. Josie Epperson also stayed hot at the plate for Lunenburg in collecting another multi- hit game.

Riley Jones had done a great job pitching and keeping the Powhatan offense at bay, but the powerful Powhatan team was able to add a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within one run.

Jones and Ellie Richmond had both done a great job on the mound for LGS and Richmond entered the contest to try to slow down the Powhatan offense.

Over the final two innings, Powhatan would add four more runs, while Lunenburg would be kept off the board on the way to a tough 9-6 loss.

The Lunenburg coaching staff stated, “Both teams had great defensive plays and good pitching. It was a good season.”

LGS Commissioner Tony Matthews who helped coach the Debs team praised all of the Lunenburg softball teams from this summer. He stated, “All the Lunenburg teams played well this season with the Angels and Ponytails coming in at Runners-up in the District.  Congrats to all the players and coaches!”
