Hats Off to the
The most recent Charlotte County Public hearing before the Board of Supervisors regarding proposed fence laws was a pleasure to attend. In my 14 years of reporting on the board this was the first public hearing that involved differences of opinion where the participants were civilized.
No accusations were made. No names were called. No cheap shots were delivered. Both sides conducted themselves with dignity and decorum in spite of the differences of opinion.
This is how it should be.

Not so Equal
On March 8, 2017, women across America suddenly took off from their jobs forcing the closure of schools and businesses to bring focus and attention to their importance in society. On what day can the men in America do the same thing? Any fair minded person has no qualms with equal pay for equal work. Just the same, where was gender equality during the second world war? How many tens of thousands of young women died fighting the air war in Europe? How many thousands of women gave their young lives on the beaches of Normandy? Where was gender equality on the islands of Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa where tens of thousands of young boys were slaughtered or disfigured for life?
Perhaps these young men in battle should of walked off their jobs too to bring focus on what an important job they were doing? If the alarms of war ring again on a global scale, … when the meat grinder of battle needs young bodies to be sacrificed, can we still expect to hear the loud drum beat of gender equality? Don’t count on it! Gender equality applies only at certain (convenient) times and places! When it comes to slaughter, where the wages you die for is water, don’t expect to see the gender equality folks lining up in great numbers with a dirty cup in one hand and a rifle in the other!
