The Central Chargers varsity girl’s basketball team took on Buckingham last week and lost a close contest in overtime against the Knights.

Central started off on fire as they surged out to a huge 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Dominique Turman-Watson got off to a fast start for the Lady Chargers on offense and helped the team jump out to the quick lead.

The second quarter saw Buckingham get their offense going and cut into the Central lead. The two teams went to halftime with Central holding a 27-19 lead.

In the third quarter, the two teams both continued to play well, but Buckingham chipped further into the CHS lead and the score was 39-34 heading into the final quarter of play. Both teams played strong defense in the final period, but Central struggled to get points on the board and Buckingham tied the game late to send it into overtime. The Chargers shot just 3 of 11 from the line in regulation and this contributed to the Knights comeback.

In the overtime period, the game continued to go back and forth, with defense leading the way. Buckingham got a late bucket to pull ahead and Central only went 1 for 6 at the free throw line. The Lady Knights held on late to claim the 49-47 victory.

Central was led by Turman-Watson who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Brittany Dolan added 11 points and MyYonte Jennings scored 9. Ashley Genova grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 4 points, while TanJaneka White-Freeman led the team with 9 assists.

Central then traveled to Nottoway to take on the Lady Cougars. Nottoway was a state qualifier last year and returns an even stronger team this year. They are winning games by an average of 33 points per game and they continued that trend against the Lady Chargers to take a 52-18 win. Nottoway played great defense and limited Central to only 29 shots the entire game and 18 rebounds. The Lady Chargers now stand at 2-2.
