Project Highlights Importance of Reading and Writing at the Elementary Level

A group of creative second graders at Kenbridge Elementary not only came up with an entertaining and fun class project, but they also had their book published. Ms. Carolyn Newbill and her class wanted to do a project that was “innovative and fun,” so the group started working on a book project this past October.

P--KES Class has book publishedNewbill stated, “Since reading and writing is really crucial we came up with idea of writing this book called, When Santa Came to KES.”

She would go on to say that each year the school has a Christmas and at the end of the program, the 5th graders lead the school in singing about the Twelve Days of Christmas and they used this as their inspiration for the story.

The story details how Santa visits Kenbridge Elementary School, but can not find the students. He searches the school and finally finds them all in the cafeteria singing Christmas songs. He is proud of the students and ends up giving each one of them a toy.

Each of the students in the class wrote and illustrated a page in the story. The group dedicated the book to KES and also presented LCPS Superintendant Charles Berkley with a copy to keep at the School Board Office.

Ms. Newbill also noted that the book had been chosen as a finalist in the National Book Challenge and the winner will be chosen in July. She noted that the students have all been very excited about this, as many of her students were on hand to show off their work.
