JV Lady Statesmen Win Over LCA

The JV Lady Statesmen softball team got another win over LCA last week.  The Statesmen came out swinging their bats and played a great defensive game.  Jumping out to an early lead of 9-2 in the first inning the ladies never looked back.  As the innings progressed the Statesmen stayed hot in the batter’s box as they added three, four and five more runs in the next three innings.  LCA rally in the bottom of the fifth with six runs fell short.

Sidney Nichols and Sarah Wilmoth each hit a double.  Others getting hits for the Statesmen were Cheyanne Newcomb, Shelby Meyers, Leighan Payne (2), Hannah Pascuita, Alyssa Rapole, Sarah Wilmoth, Chelsey Aliff, and Tori Washington.  Rapole got an in the park homerun in the third inning.  Hannah Pascuita, who was on the mound pitching her first game of the season, went the distance for the win.

In other action last week, the ladies dropped two home games.  In the first contest the Statesmen struggled with their bats as they managed only 3 hits against the Lady Raiders of Appomattox.  Getting hits for the Statesmen were Anna Pascuita, Payne and Aliff.

The third game last week was also at home against the visiting Colonels of Altavista.  The Statesmen got again got their bats swinging early as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the end of one inning.  The Colonels picked up two runs in the second and one in the third.  The Statesmen extended their lead in the third by two runs behind Wilmoth’s and Washington’s second hit of the night.

The Statesmen struggled in the fourth with numerous errors as the Colonels took a one run lead, 8-7.  Altavista would add three more in the sixth.  The Statesmen’s rally in the seventh would fall short as the Colonels took the win, 11-8.

Hitting for the Statesmen were Newcomb (2), Meyer (3 including a double), Payne, H. Pascuita, Rapole, and Nichols.  Sarah Wilmoth and Tori Washington lead the team with three hits each.

The JV Lady Statesmen close their season out this week with three games.  They are on the road to Cumberland and Buckingham early in the week and return home on Thursday for their final game against Nottoway.
