The Central Lunenburg Chargers JV football team hosted Buckingham last Thursday night in a game that may well determine the James River District Championship. While there are still lots of games left in the season and a couple of other teams may factor in, this game featured the defending champion Chargers and the deep and experienced Knights.
Central got off to a great start as they recovered an onside kick, but they would have a turnover as well and Buckingham quickly got the ball back. The Chargers would get their second turnover of the game on a fumble and Ceonte’ Watts raced in from 18 yards out to give Central an early 6-0 lead.
Buckingham answered back on a 25-yard touchdown run by Tyrese Ayers. They would get the two-point conversion and take an 8-6 lead with 5:21 left in the first quarter. After a Central fumble, Buckingham scored again as Ayers hit Peyton Taylor on a 10-yard touchdown pass that put the Knights ahead 16-6.
The Chargers would answer on the next series as a pass completion from Jackson Dalton to Watts set up a Noah Dunbar one-yard touchdown run. Watts added the two-point conversion and the score was 16-14 with 5:16 left in the half. The score would remain that way as the teams went to halftime.
Buckingham scored first in the second half as they got a defensive stop and then a 50-yard touchdown run to push their lead to 24-14.
They would add another score as Canaan Leake raced down near the goal line on a long run that set up an Ayers score.
With Buckingham leading 30-14 early in the fourth quarter, Central would mount a late rally that was started by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Jeffrey Goodwin. Dreshawn Nelson rumbled in for the two-point conversion and the Chargers trailed 30-22.
Central would get an onside kick recovery from Micajah Paynter and move down the field before a fourth down incompletion stopped the drive.
On the next Buckingham offensive series, Watts would pick up a fumble and return it 50 yards to the three-yard line. Dalton would score on a one yard QB keeper to make the score 30-28 with 2:29 left in the game. On the two-point try, Central would be stopped and Buckingham continued to hold the lead.
Paynter would once again recover a second straight onside kick and Central had new life, but the Buckingham defense would stop them and hold on for a 30-28 victory.
