JV Chargers Beat Nottoway in Double Overtime Contest

jv-chargers-1NOTTOWAY – The Central Chargers JV football team had to wait a few extra days to take on Nottoway after the contest was moved to this past Monday night, but it didn’t take away from the rivalry as Central pulled out a 34-28 victory in double overtime.

Nottoway got the scoring started early as Cameron Reekes took a QB keeper up the middle for a 21 yard touchdown run and an 8-0 Nottoway lead.

Central would be stopped on their first offensive possession, but a punt to the Nottoway 10 yard line and a fumble recovery by Kawonte Ragsdale set up the first CHS score. T’zion Wilkerson scored from 5 yards out, but the Chargers were stopped on the two point try and trailed 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Chargers took the lead before halftime when Khalil Wood made two tackles for loss against the Cougars. Central took a punt near midfield and marched down for a score when Dontae Crowder scored from one yard out. Jah’Tavious Houston added the two point conversion and Central went to the half leading 14-8.

Fumble issued plagued Central in the second half and those started early when the Chargers fumbled on their first offensive possession of the third quarter. Nottoway wasted no time capitalizing on the miscue as Dante Waters scored on a 40 yard touchdown run. Nottoway added the two point try and took a 16-14 lead.

With just over nine minutes left in the game, Central got a 48 yard touchdown run by Crowder who juked his way down the left sideline and in for a score. Houston once again added the two point conversion behind the blocking of Dawson Bishop, Shamond Sellers and Jonathan Hatchett.

The Central defense continued to play well in the second half as Kawonte Ragsdale, Ben Anthony, Geontra Ragsdale and Tre Patterson all had key tackles to stop Nottoway possessions. The Central offense was struggling with turnovers, including three in a row during the fourth quarter.

The turnovers finally came back to bite Central with just over two minutes left to play. Waters took a swing pass from Reekes and made several; Chargers defenders miss on the way to an 80 yard score. The CHS defense stopped the extra point attempt and regulation would end with the game tied at 22-22.

In the first overtime Central got on the board first when Wilkerson scored from one yard out, but the two point attempt failed. Nottoway answered back with Waters scoring once again, but Woods made a big stop on the conversion and the game went to a second overtime.

In the second OT, Central’s defense came through with several big plays and stopped Nottoway. The Chargers got 7 yards from Wilkerson and then a pair of QB sneaks from Anthony to get in the end zone and end the game with a victory.
