JohnsonFARMVILLE – With the start of the school year for Prince Edward County Schools this week, students and teachers will be under the new direction of Superintendent Barbara Johnson.

Johnson, who officially began her position in July, replaces former PECS superintendent Dr. David Smith who announced last December that he wouldn’t seek to renew his contract.

The new superintendent’s office walls are lined with a host of degrees including two master’s degrees and a Doctorate of Education in educational policy from George Washington University.

Over the years Johnson has gained her experience serving as executive director of principal support in the Baltimore City School system, as a principal in Washington D.C and as assistant superintendent of secondary schools in a district in Illinois.

“I’m honored to be the superintendent here,” said Johnson. “I am looking for a place to call home and a different environment outside of the urban areas. I want to become a true part of the community.”

Over the years the PECS system has received criticism for what some say is a declining school system. Johnson, however, says, “There’s a great deal of hope here.”

Johnson continued to say that one thing she will determine is what is fact and what is the perception of the school system.

Still in the information gathering stage, Johnson said she will be reviewing the current strategic plan. “I can not compare what I plan to do with what has been done,” she said. “First, we have to find out where our students are. We have to find their strengths and weaknesses.”

Johnson pointed out that since she began her position she has come to find out that she has a “fabulous staff.”

“The teachers I have met here are so passionate about educating our children and that tells me we have a great team.”
