It’s a Man Thing

logo- community news & viewsBefore I begin my column, this reporter has three things to say:  My mind works like lightning; one flash and it’s gone!  The only time the world beats a path to your door is if you’re in the bathroom. And, it used to be only death and taxes. Now, of course, there’s shipping and handling, too.

I couldn’t resist sharing those quotes and hope you enjoy the following story that many readers have shared with me.

Time is like a river.  You cannot touch the water twice because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life.

As a bagpiper, this man played many gigs.  Recently he was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. The man had no family or friends so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As the bagpiper was not familiar with the backwoods, he got lost and, being a typical man, didn’t stop to ask for directions.

He finally arrived an hour later and saw that the funeral director had evidently gone because the hearse was nowhere in sight.  There were only diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.  He felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

He went to the side of the grave, looked down and saw that the vault lid was already in place.  He didn’t know what else to do so he started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.  He played out his heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.  He played like he had never played before for this homeless man.

As he played, “Amazing Grace,” the workers began to weep.  They wept, the bagpiper wept, and they all wept
together.  When the bagpiper finished, he packed up his bagpipes and started for his car.  Though his head was hung low, his heart was full.

As he opened the door to his car, he heard one of the workers say, “I never saw anything like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”

Apparently, the man was still lost……it’s a man thing!  A little humor for your week!  Enjoy!

Also, a reminder for you:  As we grow older and hence, wiser, we slowly realize that whether we wear a $300 watch or a $30 watch; they both tell the same time.

Don’t educate your children to be rich.  Educate them to be happy so when they grow up they will know the value of things, not the price.
