I Knew It, I Knew It, I Knew It!!!!!

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! Finally, here’s a study that makes sense.  Many of this reporter’s same age friends have emailed this news and I must share it with my readers.

Brains of the elderly slow because they know so much.

Scientific studies show that elderly people have so much information in their brain that it takes longer for them to access it.  Doesn’t that make all of you feel better?

logo-community-newsI have several friends that think they are getting Alzheimer’s because their memory isn’t what it used to be.  I keep trying to convince them that we’re all in the same boat.  It takes longer to retrieve information from an older brain that has been collecting information since birth.  Now I have the facts, Jack, the facts!

Research suggests that older people do not decline mentally with age.  It just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains.

Much like a computer takes longer as the hard drive fills up, humans take longer to access information because they have been filling their brains longer.

Researchers say this slowing down is not the same as cognitive decline.

“The human brain appears to work slower in old age,” said Dr. Michael Ramscar, “but only because so much information has been stored there over time.  Older people simply know more so selecting a correct choice from the trove of stored data may take a bit longer.”

Now all of you know why it takes my brain so long to respond to your questions when I see you out on the street.  It is because my brain has to scan such a vast amount of knowledge.

I have never, I say NEVER, been good at remembering anyone’s name.  If I look blank when you are talking to me, please tell me your name.  It might eventually circle around to the front of my brain but it also may take a while.  Several days later, I’ve been known to say to my hubby, “That was Josephine that we were talking to last week!”

It seems like folks can call me by my first name but I have a hard time if I haven’t seen you lately.  Many times I will say, “And you’re who?”  I also use the alphabet game to remember a name.  Usually by the third saying of the alphabet, I can come up with the right name of a person.

To help my memory and yours, let’s try doing brain memory games.  These are fun games to chisel your brain.  You can download tons of these games for free to keep your mind busy.  It does help with memory or you can keep repeating the alphabet like I do!
