Gladys Chandler Barden

Gladys Chandler Barden, 80, of Chesterfield, went home to be with her Savior on February 26, 2014. She was born in Burkeville, Va. to the late Fred and Thelma (Dobson) Chandler on December 6, 1933.

obit Barden, GladyIn addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Barden, and her son, Alvin “Butch” Clarke. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Paul May; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Donna Barden; grandsons, Chris T. Clarke, Chris W. Clarke, Jonathan Clarke, Michael Clarke, Jacob May and David May; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Ola Swain and Elsie Brown; and brother, Roy Chandler. Gladys was a graduate of Burkeville High School.

She began her career at age 18 as a GS2 clerk-typist at Camp Picket and finished as a GS14 Systems Analyst at DGSC. She retired in November 1991 after 40 years of Civil Service. Gladys was a devoted mother and loved her grandchildren with all her heart. Gladys was a member of Ironbridge Baptist Church and one of her great joys was her Sunday School class. She coached Little League softball, loved to dance, travel and work in her garden. She participated in a local bowling league well into her 70’s, volunteered at Chippenham Hospital and was an active member of the Senior Friends Group.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the loving people at Comfort Keepers and Dunlop House-Rose Court who cared for Gladys in so many ways. The family received friends 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. last Saturday at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rte.10), N. Chestfield, VA. Her funeral service was 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Her graveside service was last Monday at Dale Memorial Park.
