Fuqua Students Examine the Human Body

Honors GeneticsFuqua School’s Honors Genetics and Biology classes are studying in depth the cardiovascular and the respiratory systems. The opportunity arose to bring actual pig tracheas, a set of lungs, and a heart to these classes. Teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Hodges Sears was thrilled to be able to show the students how breathing actually occurs in their body. Using a self-inflating resuscitator, an endotracheal tube, and an air filled syringe, Mrs. Sears could simulate inspiration and expiration for the students. Each student was given the opportunity to make the lungs “breathe” and was able to physically see the placement and size of the heart. Because they mirror the anatomy of the human body, the pig organs were a great tool to use.
