Fuqua School juniors Katarina Gebauer and Alexis Williams, with alternates Lucy Wallace and Lydia Painter, have been selected to represent the school at the 67th Virginia Girls State session which will be held at Longwood University this summer. Fuqua School’s representatives to Virginia Boys State are Jacob Spencer and Luke Wyatt, with alternates Troy Howard and Trent Jacobs. The 72nd session of Virginia Boys State will be held this summer at Radford University.

American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Boys State are the premier programs for teaching how government works while developing leadership skills and an appreciation for the rights as a citizen. The students are chosen through an interview process conducted by the local American Legion and evaluated based on their leadership abilities, interest in government, service to their school and community, and academics. The purpose is to provide functional citizenship training for rising high school seniors. During the week long program, the students are informed of the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.

These leadership action programs are designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon the citizen the fact that our government is just what we make it.
