LUNENBURG – Homecoming would have been perfect for the Central Chargers this past Friday night if only the game had been a couple minutes shorter. After dominating play on the field, crowning a queen at halftime and hanging on for most of the fourth quarter, Central succumb to injuries and the Goochland passing attack as they fell in a heartbreaking 24-10 game.

The Chargers came out of the gate with a strong running attack that drove down the field on the first possession and got three points on a 16-yard field goal by Ben Atkins.

The Chargers got the ball back quickly when Keaun Baskerville recovered on a muffed kick. Central then went on a 12-play march from midfield that ended when Dashawn Moore scored from 3 yards away to put the Chargers up 10-0.

Goochland would answer back on their next offensive series. John McGrath would have a big tackle for loss and Raymond Alexander batted down a pass to force a Goochland field goal to make the score 10-3.

The teams would show strong defense the rest of the second quarter and the score remained the same at halftime.

Goochland would answer quickly with a score on their first series after halftime, but Central would get a 40 yard pass completion from Malik Foster to Brandon Scott out of the wildcat formation to move into the red zone. Foster scored on a 7-yard run and Central surged ahead 17-10. The Chargers would get another stop and long drive that ended with an Atkins field goal from 15 yards to give them a 20-10 lead with only six minutes left in the game.

Goochland would mount a furious rally as Central’s defense suffered several injuries in the secondary. After a touchdown pass would make the score 20-17, the Bulldogs forced a quick Central punt and had the ball with just under 3 minutes left to play.

Goochland would score with 1:12 left on the clock and pick off a desperation throw by Central to claim the 24-20 win.
