APPOMATTOX – Well, some did but everyone sure had fun trying! The Young Farmers Association and Appomattox Farm Bureau presented an exciting Truck and Tractor Pull show, Friday and Saturday night, August 5th and 6th. Until now, the event’s fun was limited to only one night. This year, the Young Farmers Association chose to expand the thrills and competition over two highly entertaining evenings.

Each year the event is held, it draws in approximately 3,000 spectators. This year it was expected that at least that many spectators would be in attendance and hopefully even more since it was a two night event.

Upon arriving at the Truck and Tractor Pull Show, there were powerful trucks and tractors all around. It was a real sight to see before the actual show even began. Competitive pullers came from near and far (at least one from Maryland) to see if he/she had what it took to take home the prize and of course, bragging rights. The crowd went wild when the trucks/tractors pulled the entire length of the track and were completely disheartened at other times when a competitor experienced damage to his/her vehicle or, just did not have what it took to go the distance.

Members of the Farm Bureau and Young Farmers Association were proud to share that every single dollar that is profited from the Truck and Tractor Pull is given away to various good causes. One of the major organizations that they provide assistance to is Gleaning for the World, (www.gftw.org). In addition, the two groups have previously contributed to the Future Farmers of America, 4-H, tornado victims and local families that have experienced great loss. Finally, Farm Bureau and Young Farmers Association sponsor an agriculture scholarship each year. This particular agriculture scholarship is available to any local rising senior. If you know of someone that is interested in pursuing a career in agriculture, please strongly encourage him/her to contact the Appomattox Farm Bureau for a scholarship application. Someone will be granted this incredible award to benefit his/her education, why shouldn’t it be you or your loved one?

So, if at all possible, plan to attend the Truck and Tractor Pull each year. It is an outstanding family activity that benefits so many in the community. All of the monies raised go to great causes and there is something there for everyone ranging from great food to local fire companies and of course those competing in the event. Hope to see you there next year!
