DARLINGTON HEIGHTS – The quick response and work of the Darlington Heights Fire Department and Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department helped save two homes in that area of Prince Edward during a Sunday morning brush fire.
The departments were called to the scene of a brush fire around 5:00 a.m. where several acres of land were on fire and spreading. The fire spread quickly under the windy and dry conditions that morning.
Responders noted that the spreading fire came within 10 feet of two homes, but they were able to stop it from spreading and save both homes.
The two departments were joined by Virginia Forestry Department officials as well to help put out and secure the area.
The fire was reportedly started by someone disposing of ashes in the area.
Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department officials also issued a warning for the area that same day stating, “The National Weather Service has issued a red flag fire weather warning for our area. This means that gusty winds, low humidity, and dry conditions will make any fire that starts spread quickly. Please use caution during this time.”
