Fatal Fire Claims One Life

Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, firefighters were dispatched to a fire on Prince Edward Highway (Highway 460) in Rice. Firefighters from Farmville, Rice and Burkeville responded to the scene and found a single wide trailer fully involved with heavy smoke and fire showing on all sides. Witnesses on scene indicated that an individual was still in the home, but firefighters were unable to make entry due to the extent of the blaze. After the fire was brought under control, crews located a body inside the home. According to a press release by Prince Edward Sheriff Wesley Reed, the remains were sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner and were identified as Robert Ray Carr, 53, of Rice. The incident is under investigation by Virginia State Police Special Agent B.K. Childress and the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office. Based on the investigation, the fire appears to have originated in the kitchen and is not suspicious in nature.
