The Farmville Town Council, in a surprise move during the last meeting, decided to assume the responsibility of the completion and care of the dog park that has been in the works for Farmville for some time now. The move comes at the advice of Town Manager Gerry Spates after discussing the progress that has been made thus far by The Friends of Farmville VA Dog Park and other advocating citizens, such as Farmville veterinarian, Dr. French. Mr. Spates went on to say that he thought it would be “…a good addition to the town.”  Council has put a $30,000 cap on town funds to be used in the construction of the park. The non-profit group has already raised $15,000 in donations for the park.

Jerri Morton addressed the Council during the last meeting, reminding everybody of the One Hundred Mile Yard Sale that is coming up again on the first Saturday in July. Always gracious, animated and upbeat, Ms. Morton asked for sponsors for the yard sale and told those in attendance that the annual event is growing and may, in fact, be the “125-mile yard sale” this year due to the fact that “…Chase City has asked to tag along.”

Other town business discussed at the meeting: The Class II Burn Building that will be used as a training facility for the Fire Department is making headway, according to the Town Manager. The water lines are being run to it as construction continues on the project.  Price amounts to move the old caboose have come in; they range from $35,000 on the high end to $12,000 on the low end. The general recommendation was to put the funds into next year’s budget for the work to be done. Also, the lease for F.A.C.E.S. that was discussed during the last meeting was approved. The lease will be for ten years with an option to renew for ten years. An equipment purchase from Henrico County was approved for the town at the last meeting. In a show of reciprocity, the town approved the donation of a truck to Piedmont Regional Jail for all of the work the jail performs around the town on various projects. Council has approved the advertisement of Motley Lake for sale in the newspaper. The town will maintain water rights to the property in the event of sale.

Finally, Mayor Whitus issued a proclamation of achievement in recognition of the members of Boy Scout troop #6516 that attained Eagle Scout status.
