The Farmville Jaycees held their annual Installation Night at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe on Thursday, January 23. The group welcomed six new board members for the 2014 year: Becca Snyder, President; John Miller, Vice-President; Jasper Hendricks III, State Director; Cam Patterson, Secretary; Jeff Gore, Treasurer and Sarah Miller, Membership Development Director.

The Farmville Jaycees are responsible for providing service and support to the community, and have a good time while doing it. Past events that the Jaycees have sponsored include First Fridays, Adopt-A-Street Project, The Farmville Christmas Parade and Santa Night to name a few.

Established in 1940, the Farmville Jaycees have been active in the area for a long time and was first bought to town by the Richmond Jaycees, as they wanted to help spread the efforts of the group to other communities. The Jaycees are a worldwide leadership training and community service organization.

Historically, the Jaycees have provided many contributions to the town of Farmville by collecting tin, paper and fat meats in the 40’s to help war efforts, numbering all homes in the town limits, starting the Farmville Christmas Parade in the 50’s, helping combat the polio epidemic in the 60’s by organizing clinics for immunization at the local fire departments, founding the Prince Edward Rescue Squad, being one of the first to allow women in the organization in 1985 and giving the slate “Welcome to Farmville” sign to the town.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month and those interested in joining should submit an application for membership, which can be found at www.farmvillejaycees.com. Men and women 18-40 are eligible.
