The official dedication of the new LOVEworks art work in Farmville was held on December 19th. LOVEworks is a movement developed by the Virginia Department of Tourism that grew from the Virginia is for Lovers tourism campaign that is so well known today. There are currently more than 35 LOVE art pieces on display in various locales throughout the state.
Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates emceed the well-attended dedication ceremony on the sunny, but chilly Friday midday. Various town and county officials, as well as members of the Farmville Chamber of Commerce, Farmville Downtown Partnership and the Virginia Department of Tourism, took the opportunity to express their gratitude and excitement over the new art piece that sits at the intersection of the High Bridge Trail and Main Street, as well as what it means
The art piece itself was designed and constructed by Al Buczek, a local carpenter well known for his talent and craftmanship. His design beautifully captures the spirit of Farmville for visitors to see. It is made of wood in the style of a timber frame structure. The wooden pegs that hold the individual pieces together are plainly visible. Along the entire top of the piece is an excellent representation of High Bridge, one of if not the most recognizable and visited tourist attractions in Farmville. The center of the letter “O” is Lexan plexiglass with a map of downtown and the historic district painted on it.
Mr. Buczek, at the urging of Mr. Spates, took the podium to say a few words to those in attendance. Humbly, he thanked everyone involved for the opportunity to build the sign for the Town. “I hope that it just brings more love to the town of Farmville,” he said in closing. Judging from the expressions on the faces of those in attendance, it already has.
