Eureka Celebrates Reading Month

During the month of March, students at Eureka Elementary have been participating in a variety of reading activities.  Everyone loves cake, so we began our celebrations with a birthday cake.  Author Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) wrote many, many famous books for children, so everyone enjoyed a slice of cake to commemorate his birthday.  A calendar was sent home with lots of activities that families could partake in at home, as well as a week of Seuss activities.

Special dress days were set aside to coincide with several of Dr. Seuss’ books, like Seuss Day, Red and Blue Day, Foot Day, Wacky Day, T-shirt with Words Day, and Hat Day. We also have Friday dress days for the rest of the month:  March 16-Sports Team Day, March 25-Animal Print Day and March 30-School Spirit Day.  The Cat in the Hat also made a stop at Eureka to read to a few of our classes.  The students enjoyed listening to the story that was read.

Each Thursday, Eureka opens the Cozy Café.  Teachers bring their class to the café to read books and enjoy a treat.  To show students how wonderful books are, each grade level will be working on reading picture books or a chapter book and then watch the movie to compare the two.  This is an activity that has been done for several years and it is wonderful to hear children say that the book was way better than the movie!

We hope that our students are enjoying our reading activities.  Dr. Seuss said it best; “The more that you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”  Reading is a gift that no one can take away, so pick up a book and READ!
