The 19th Annual South Central Bike Fair was held in Chase City this past June 12th, 13th and 14th. Saturday provided near perfect early summer weather for the last day of the event. The Bike Fair, as if to make up for being rained out last year, provided plenty of fine motorcycles to see. There were bikes of all types and all ages, from the latest models, to trikes, to customized bikes that looked as if they came from the edge of someone’s imagination. There were motorcycles for the purist as well, exampled in particular by one spotless Harley-Davidson Police bike, white shining and chrome flashing in the sun as if it were ready for duty.

Music for the event was provided by bands such as “One More Time,” “Roseland Band,”  “Backwood” and “The Konnection Band.” The schedule of events for the three day Fair included a BBQ and brew on Thursday, sponsored by the Chase City Chamber of Commerce. Friday evening there was a Classic Car and Motorcycle Cruise-In, with a cash drawing for cruise-in cars. The event’s Poker Run took place on Saturday. Chris White of Chase City won the $500.00 purse for the Poker Run. The infamous “burnout contest” was held on Saturday as well (my personal favorite, although the smoke was so thick by the end of the event I could not see which way the winner went.). Also on Saturday there was judging and trophies handed out for twenty-five different classes of motorcycle, from Japanese/American touring to Trike, to the revered Old School Class, and all in between. The twenty-sixth class was Best of Show, won by Vance Whitlow with a stunning customized green Harley-Davidson that, well, remember that “edge of someone’s imagination” comment earlier? This creation may well have stepped over the edge.

The Bike Fair was served with ample concessions as well, with plenty of memorabilia, tee shirts and biker gear to shop for when not checking out the numerous bikes, and there was plenty of good to eat in just about any direction.

Sarah Cuffe, the event coordinator, said that although attendance may have been a bit light this year,”…. this is a whole lot better than last year, we didn’t have anyone because of the rain.” She went on to add, “I enjoy doing this because it is for a worthy cause.”

All proceeds for the Annual Bike Fair go to the support of the Chase City Volunteer Fire Department.
