Easy Holiday Fun!

The big day for most children is drawing nearer every day. And those days are flying by!

logo-wee-notesWhat have you done with your wee one this week? Allow me to give you a few really easy activities, to get you started. They are also fun for your child.

Cool Whip Cookies

Ingredients: 1 box cake mix (any flavor – chocolate, red velvet, lemon, etc.)

1 tub Cool Whip (8 oz. size)

1 egg

powdered sugar enough to coat the cookie dough

Mix the first three ingredients. Drop spoonfuls of dough into powdered sugar to coat. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Cool before removing from the cookie sheet.

Buckeyes

Ingredients: ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) margarine (softened)

1 1/3 cups peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)

3 cups powdered sugar

1 pkg. chocolate bark (melted)

Beat the butter and peanut butter in a large bowl until blended. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until well blended. Cover. Refrigerate until firm enough to shape, about 30 minutes. Shape into 1 ½ -inch balls. Let the shaped balls return to room temperature and become dry-ish on the outside.

Melt the chocolate bark according to package directions.

Insert a toothpick or wooden skewer into a ball and dip it into the melted chocolate—coating a little more than ¾ of the ball. Place on wax paper with the small, uncoated area up. Remove the toothpick. Continue with all the peanut butter balls. Leave at room temperature until the chocolate sets up. Store the buckeyes in an airtight container at room temperature.

This recipe makes about five dozen candies. That’s enough to enjoy with lots left over to share with family and friends.

NOTE: Many people think these candies are named for the eyes of male deer. However, I was fortunate enough to grow up on a farm with a very old buckeye tree. The seedpod of the tree looked just like these candies.

Special Keepsake Box

What you will need: At least a 12”x12”x1” deep, sturdy cardboard box. School glue (enough to coat the inside of the box lid). A few drops of your food color choice. Let your child smear the glue/food color mixture inside the box lid. After the area is covered pretty well, have her press her hand firmly into the glue mixture. Allow the glue to dry completely. On an index card, write: Here is a memory box to keep the things you treasure. And inside is my handprint that you can keep forever.

(I would LOVE to have one of these from each of my grandchildren! Hint-hint.)

Happy parenting. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year.
