Earth Day Celebration Out of This World

Written by on May 16, 2014 at 2:58 pm

Although there was a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, the weather held up perfectly on Saturday, May10 as people gathered at Central Middle School to celebrate the annual Earth Day event sponsored by the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce.

DSC_1578Warm weather was in full effect and Earth Day 2014 offered a variety of activities for those of all ages to enjoy. Outside, children could enjoy carriage rides by Draft Horse Adventures for a small fee, barrel car rides, the Orbitron (Awesome Party Supplies), a tropical bounce house and alligator bounce house. A selection of festival foods were also being sold, including funnel cakes, sno-cones, baked goods, hot dogs, hamburgers, fried Oreos, sausage, etc. to satisfy any hunger pains festival goers might have accumulated throughout the day.

The atmosphere was alive in front of CMS as DJ-Jrok provided a good mixture of music throughout the day to satisfy everyone’s tastes. A special hip-hop performance was given by Horizon Goldstarr Artist Une3kk, which featured all original tracks written by him. “It was a pleasure performing for all that attended Earth Day this year and I appreciate everyone that came out and supported me. The event was packed with many things to do and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and hope to be a part of many more,” commented Une3kk.

For all the animal lovers, The Southside SPCA had a booth set up and even brought along a few four-legged friends to help celebrate Earth Day. The Southside SPCA generated over $300 in donations with their prize wheel this year. Heather Harding was with Southside SPCA and she commented that the purpose of them setting up a booth was “just letting people know we are there and about our spay and neuter program (that is most always free).”

If being outdoors was not preferable all day, then guests were in luck. Inside the CMS gym, a large number of vendors were set up selling everything from jewelry to makeup and purses. Checking out the booths inside was an awesome way to cool off and do a little bit of Mother’s Day shopping without even leaving town!

Just because you were inside didn’t mean the music had to stop. The CMS and Randolph-Henry bands were set up in the cafeteria for those who enjoy the sound of live music being played. The bands were under the direction of Mr. Derek Ramsey. Performances from the 6th grade band, 7th grade band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band ran throughout the day until 2:30 p.m.

Perhaps the highlight of the afternoon was having a special guest in attendance. Patrick (Henry) Jolly, sixth great-grandson of Patrick Henry was at the festival and entertained the crowd with stories from the past. History buffs could also stop by the Red Hill booth where workers in period dress were showing a demonstration on punching and weaving.

Beverley Fitz, Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce, expressed her gratitude by saying “I want to thank everyone who came out and enjoyed the Earth Day Festival. We had 70 booths, activities, exhibits indoors and outdoors and we hope to grow the festival each year. A huge thank you to those that volunteered to help out and to those that donated their time for this Chamber of Commerce event. Of special note are James Gregory for providing the awesome music that livened up the outdoors, Italia and Une3kK for outstanding performances. Also, a thank you to all the teachers and CCPS students who prepared projects and performances for the festival. Mark your calendars for the second Saturday in May for the 2015 Earth Day festival!”
