big floatHigh School students in Mrs. Drapers “Education for Employment” class at Prince Edward County High School volunteered their time this week to number 2500 rubber ducks for the United Way of Prince Edward County.  This task will help the United Way prepare for its big spring fundraiser, The Great Farmville Duck Derby.  Ducks will race on the Appomattox River and reach their final destination around 5 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Riverside Park as part of the Heart of Virginia Festival, with all proceeds benefitting the United Way’s 20 partner organizations.  Plans call for 5,000 ducks to be sold. Owner of the first-place duck will receive $1,000; the second-place duck, $500; and the third-place duck, $250. The board hopes to have all the tickets sold by early April. Ducks may be adopted through the United Way, Citizens Bank in Farmville, Fishin’ Pig restaurant, and Uptown Coffee Café. You may also purchase ducks at the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce. It was so great to get our students involved in a community organization that serves so many. Pictured from left are Shameka Jones, Briana Thorton and Raven Jennings.
