Driver Strikes Building in Victoria Charged with Hit and Run

Driver Strikes BuildingVICTORIA – An incident in Victoria last Friday night ended with a local resident being charged with hit and run.

Virginia State Police Trooper Reeves led an investigation following a vehicle striking a building and continuing on toward Kenbridge. The accident took place around 8:00 p.m. when a 1993 Mercury Cougar entered the curve along Main Street near Benchmark Bank. The car ran onto the sidewalk and struck the DMJ Trading building in the area. The vehicle knocked down a portion of the brick facing of the building and ran over several items in front of the store before returning to the road and traveling toward Kenbridge.

The driver was stopped and identified as Cody Overton of Victoria. The 22-year-old man was charged with hit and run. He was not injured in the accident, but Trooper Reeves noted that he was also not wearing a seat belt.

DMJ authorities were at the location and said that they heard a loud boom, but by the time they got to the front of the store, the car was traveling away from the area. Victoria Police Chief Keith Phillips also responded to the location following the accident.
