Loophole that allowed sale of “spice” closed on July 1

On May 29th, 2013 the Crewe Police announced it was investigating the break-ins to local businesses. On May 11th, 2013 Crewe Exxon was broken into and “spice,” synthetic marijuana, was taken. On May 28th, 2013, Perks was broken into via a glass window and cigarettes were taken.

Chief A.A. Booth II is pleased to announce that multiple arrest have been made in these cases. On July 12th, Elmo Hugh Runion, 19, of Blackstone along with a 15-year-old juvenile were arrested for the breaking and entering of Crewe Exxon on May 11th, 2013. Later that night another juvenile was arrested for the break-in at Perks.

In addition to the arrests a search warrant was executed in the 400 block of East Tennessee Ave. in reference to the Crewe Exxon break-ins. As a result of the search warrant stolen items from Exxon were located inside the residence.

The sale of some synthetic marijuana, in Crewe Exxon and other stores in Virginia, was legal before July 1 of this year. Makers of synthetic marijuana would change their substances formulas slightly so they were not in violation of the law.

The changes in Virginia law as of July 1 closes that loophole. The law now includes any synthetic substance that is designed to emulate the effects of marijuana. If you have any information on this crime, or any other crime, please contact the Crewe Police Department at 434-645-7472.
