LUNENBURG – Lunenburg County officials issued a public notice last week that the final remaining dumpsites in the county will be closing this month. Board of Supervisors members have been working to close all of the traditional dumpsite locations around Lunenburg for the past several years and replace them with manned sites in several areas.

The announcement this week stated, “We will be closing the last remaining two open dumpsites the last week of October.”

The closure locations are the dumpsites on Gigg Road and Potts Spring Road that will be permanently closed during the week of October 26.  There will be signs at the sites to direct County residents to the nearest convenience centers.

Lunenburg County is seeking land to purchase in this (the southeastern) portion of the county to construct a solid waste convenience site.  We welcome anyone who owns property in this area and is interested in selling to please contact the County Administration Office at 434-696-2142.

Residents will also be required to show proof of residence at the convenience centers (examples: vehicle registration, utility bill, driver’s license).

There are also new hours that will begin in November at some of the current Convenience Sites. Starting November 2 the Solid Waste Convenience Centers located at 13498 Oral Oaks Road and 66 Switchback Road will no longer be open 24 hours per day, but have specified hours of operation.  The Oral Oaks and Switchback Convenience Sites will be open Monday through Saturday 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

County officials stated, “All convenience sites will be manned during operating hours and are for residential waste only.  Any items that are not residential waste should be taken to the landfill for disposal.”
