The December meeting of the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors convened on Wednesday evening. One of the supervisors, however, was conspicuously absent from her regular place. Patti Cooper-Jones, who serves as the vice-chairman of the Board as she represents the Farmville district, recently had back surgery. She is currently staying with relatives on the Eastern  Shore while recuperating. All of those in attendance bid her well wishes, expressing their hopes for a speedy recovery.

The Board addressed several matters at the Wednesday evening meeting. An early topic was the citizen appointments to the various positions that are vacant on committees in the county. The vacancies had been recently advertised to the public by the Board and citizens are now expressing interest in the positions.  They include a citizens’ volunteer appointment and a position on the In-Town Planning Commission. There is also a vacancy on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Those appointments will be published by The Southside Messenger as they are made available.

In Highway Matters, Assistant County Administrator Sarah Puckett spoke for Kevin Wright, reminding the Board that it is time to schedule a work session to discuss the six-year work plan. Additionally, there was talk of a public meeting to discuss the 619 bridge project with citizens. The Board of Supervisors and VDOT are going to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 12th, at 1:00 pm. The ceremony is for the new Route 633 (Virso Road/ Mt. Pleasant Road) bridge that goes over Bush River. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this ceremony. Additional information can be found by contacting the Prince Edward County Administrator’s office at (434) 392-8837.

Board Chairman Howard Simpson stepped down from the YMCA at Wednesday’s meeting. He appointed Calvin Gray and Charles McKay in his place.

The finance committee recommended that the county purchase a new garbage truck and work truck for the county.  The county will in turn, sell the old garbage truck.

Finally, The Prince Edward County School Board has agreed to meet with the Board of Supervisors. This meeting has been the intention of the Board of Supervisors for some time. The scheduled time for the meeting is January 13, 2015 at 5:30 p.m.
